D&D

Post by L124RD » Tue Sep 24, 2002 11:14 am

Salutations,
I am sure that at least a few of you play dungeons and dragons at some point... anyway. My current group currently has 3 people who are actually experienced in the game (two of whom are the DMs) 1 person thats played for about a year (without reading PHB *sigh*) as well as three others whom joined who know nothing about hte game, haven't read the PHB (and i think just show up for the soda and chips but thats beside the point) and are ok. soon, we are going to get another two people whom are very experience in second ed and whom are going to learn how to play third ed as it is easier played in groups. now that you have some backround here is the problem: with this many people any one talking out of turn and in general not respecting the DM makes the game really hard to play. What are some good ideas, in your opinion, to make the players respect the DMs? We have thought of things such as punishment but that won't really work as we are 2nd (?) level... Thanks in advance for your help.

Have the DM be a hot chick that everyone wants to sleep with.

Do what we did!

Use a jar, everytime someone acts up they have to drop $1 (or $0.50 or $0.25, whatever you want) into the jar. Then that money is used to buy new supplies for the group and such.

Cheers,

Domo

Liz,

I find that an ak47 really helps concentration and respect of the DM...

D&D - havent played in almost 20 years lol (showing my age now) - DMs were always way too crafty - and people btch that verant are unfair...!

There is as of yet no way to get DMs the respect they deserve at the table.

What needs to happen is that the group needs to be more interested in experiancing the game then in giving the DM a hard time.

Unfortunatly the only way that happens is if you have (

a) an already mature group

(b) a game so good that the players would rather drink the ashtray soda then interrupt the DM.

You may want to consider paring down your group (though that may happen through natural selection)

Random Encounter

Post by MrSmallie » Wed Oct 23, 2002 5:45 pm

I have my special random encouter "die" for those situations. It's a marble. I scale the encounter based on how annoyed I am with the person. You can't be a wimpy GM to use this method. Don't just let the PCs win.

Well first of like in any group the "DM" Has to comand respest. He/She should be well versed in the game (and thats ALOT of reading), as well in the players.
Start of simlpe and small, make sure the player make there characters from scratch (bringing in an old charater usualy couses problems unless there are willing to strip it of all they have, including exp). And of couse to be there to over see the character creation.
Lay down the rules, nothing harsh just simlpe rules. You can start by designating what each person will do at the table.
-Map maker.
-die roller (this is a big one that I stick by...anything importent that needs to be roled for that you think the players should feal thay have some contoll over should be rolled by them, BUT to reduce confution only have one person do all the rolling for the sesion).
-Group speeker (Just like in EQ have a designated leader that does all the major disitions...the group talks to him/her, they talk to you. It can get confusing haveing 6people yelling at you what they want to do).
-Remeber the DM is in control of the eviroment and tells the players how there actions change and react with the enviroment around them (You are after all the story teller) Dont let the players manipulate the storyboard beond your control.
-Make it fun! even a Kolbod at 1st lvl can be a challeng to charaters if played right and always make them feel (unlike some games that will not be mentioned) that they are acomplishing something in the game. When a player gets bored and frustrated they find new ways and creative ways of being destructive in a gaming inviroment including losing all intrest and leaving.
-Keep everyone at the table bussy, Map maker, Die roller, Speaker, Manservent, the guy that sits next to the DM making all the soundefects while telling him/her who wounderfull they are and what a great person they have become.......

Wow am I realy that long winded??
