Patch to fix the patch to fix the patch to ....

Post by pw » Fri Feb 04, 2005 6:43 am

Yet another patch today ... servers coming down at 12pm GMT. Oh deep joy.

<rhetorical_question> Do SOE actually TEST their code ? </rhetorical_question>

I just love patch days and server update and maintenance days, they make the game so much better. I couldn't live without them.

Fuck writing MQ2 macros. Go with IS scripts; IS Rules!

Servers are back up (for now) (well, except for AB) as of 8am EST, and no new EXE.

Damn fine point. Maintaining such a complex codebase as EQ with a few hundred thousand extra whiny users ain't a fun job. Code by nature contains bugs, bug free code >100k lines does not exist.

i'd be inclined to think you two actually could do better with a multimillion dollar budget and some flunkies :P)

would that be Sarnak Flunkies?

naah the game is great as is, just hard to start lowbies again if you don't want PL, just made a monk and got from lvl 1-50 in about a month, mostly solo, an I must say I enjoy the old zones much better then the new ones (maybe because you can solo in them?) camped my own fishbone earring and jboots and so on ooh well got a little off track here, but I love this game

Actually it's the flunkies that would introduce the bugs it's in their design and part of their job description.

Take two programming facts...
1) All programs contains at least 1 bug
2) All programs can be reduced by 1 line of code

Take the two facts above to thier conclusion and you come up with...
All programs can be reduced to one line of code that does not work...

could I do better? yes. id publish my code to some sort of mythical "Test" server first, and then not go live with it when it didnt work.

That's a good plan in theory, but what if it works on your small test base on your mythical test server, but then problems are discovered when it is live?
You certainly cant have 250k players on the test server, and you can't keep changes on your test server for a year before they go live while people are whining left and right for updates and their class sucks and their new weapon sucks etc.

Oh, and let's not forget the pressure from management to get it in place. There are very, very few projects where the acceptable level of error is zero.
