All forums need a place for all the posts for people in the community to rant about things not relating to what the forum is about. This is that forum.

Another thing to consider:
If the Dungeon Master is a weeny, he won't be respected anyway.

Here is my 2gp on a great 4+ hours of Game time:

I used to request the players arrive in Character, or atleast Bring an item they consider to belong to the character they play. It helps with the focus.

As the DM i would be dressed in a Over sized deep Purple cloak, similar to Spectre, but couldn't see my face.

I would set the people down the other end of the Table with their refreshments and hand them a few sets of dice.

The light dimmer for the room was near me anyway.. so we'd start off in charcter, with the meets and greets, as that wound down, they'd pack up and visit the local Merchant or wandering merchant if i sent one there way.

When the group was requiped with food, water, tools etc.., and i see them just sorta standing around, i as the DM would push them along by dimming lights, and starting my sound effects i created for that campaign.

A great DM once told me while i was learning... he said "Learn how to read people".

Using that ability you get a sense of each persons character and the way they react to certain in-game situations.. so when they get out of line, out of character or appear to be getting out of game.. I'd use a method that grabs their attention.. unanounced npc attack, or a hint of an item nearby..or a sound effect to perk their ears.

Reality checks come every 1 hour. Lights up, Bathroom breaks.. etc. But always leave them is suspense.. Example: Just completed clearing a hallway leading to a goal room.. final battle done and the charcters are about to open the door.. * Reality Check *.

It works wonders, They get excited enough to keep interest while they are on the break, and eager to continue.

I end the 4 hour sessions the same way. Always leave them guessing whats next.

Well. Thats what i USED to do when i had a regular group of a 3 Married church going couples.. my teaching DM, and a few friends that would show up regularly.. Started out first campaign with 1 married couple and the DM teacher.. ended my time as a DM some 8 months later with a regular group of 12.

Great DM's get noticed. Sound effects, lack of stutter, ability to read a persons personality, and the abilty to describe surroundings are all a plus.

BTW, i did read your very long post.. the story here on the board. the one with the cat. I liked it.

Best wishes to you.
