charge a service of like 20 bucks a year or so and pass out pre-complied binaries to them. Way for you to rake in big $$$.

Only 20 bucks a year? could easily get away with like 10 a month, or however much people pay for Xylobot. Probably wouldnt need to get a new job then :P. Although then you would have problems with sourceforge and stuff i guess

You guys are missing it totally.... Lax should simply sell support. Everything else about this project is GPL. But access to a support forum could sell.

I'm not the only developer ;)

I was thinking about putting up VIP forums for people who have donated

What would your minimum donation be for the VIP forums? I've only donated 10$ so far :(

I can see Lax wearing a sign now:

"Homeless Coder: Will write your macros for FOOD!"

That would be a huge violation of the licensing aggreement.

GPL doesn't prevent you from selling binaries, as long as you provide the source.

Modified GPL

The license that you accept when you download is GPL, but with the understanding that binaries are for personal use only.
Think of it as GPL, SOE style (i.e. GPL Nerfed) :)
Actually it's to save the game, if this thing had alot of idiots running around who didn't understand how to compile, how it worked, or anything, and just had the binary, all hell would break loose in game.
And we would be seeing everything we do with macros get nerfed with every patch.

And oh yeah I almost forgot, McKorr does offer a precompiled binary, for a donation of something or other, I think it's plat IIRC :)

Mckorr did offer a single compiled MQ for plat to be delivered to the server and character of his choice. AFAIK, nobody took him up on the offer thouhg.

I offered to do the same thing w/ some support ... until he and I got in to a price war and I decided to back down.

There are thousands of companys making a living selling support of GPL licensed software.

So which licensing aggreement are you referring?

MQ2 is not quite GPL

The MQ2 Licsense is GPL with the exception, of expressly prohibiting binary (compiled) distribution.

Otherwise and trust me on this, I would already be selling the precompiled binaries, and splitting the fee with the devs.

Well considering the copyright is Plazmic's... and we have already gone this route before with sprite... I can tell you that you can not distribute precompiled binaries for money. The only way you could do that would be to charge for the physical media that you sent them on.

I'd donate for sure. I have used my fare share of MQ and was thinking about donating anyways.

Fucking program is THE OWN! When this program dies, I quit EQ.

OH, I am sure this might have been asked before so please feel free to RTFM me.

Are you guys thinking about developing this app for other games?

I would hate to see this go to a fee based system, not that I coudn't probably afford it, but I think lots of people here get credit for little things they do on thier spare time. These people would probably stop adding features (unless they got a cut somehow) otherwise they would just be increasing the value of a product someone else is selling. Nobody wants to do that.

As for a pay/donate for an advanced support forum.. Now that sounds kinda fun. Maybe even a donate for macros type thing. I could see people paying for advanced macros (maybe even me).
