Alright already, I apologize

Post by Domosan » Sat Feb 28, 2004 8:41 pm

Look, I never meant to cause such a huge ordeal about all this. It was a long morning as I had to send out MQAuth.exe 4 times and recompile MQ2 4 times today to get it working for my friends who do not have access to VS .NET (and who refuse to use illegal copies of software {warez}).

At the time, after a 16hr shift at work, invoking the GPL seemed like an exceptionally good way to express my discontent at all the extra work I had to go through just to help out my friends. I make a lot of changes to the source, adjusting things to work exactly the way I want them, which means I have to recompile a lot (yes, even MQ2Main.dll), which means I have to keep track of 4 MQAuth0.h files and recompile and e-mail out 4 copies everytime I make a change and need to get it to my friends.

I revoke my request for the source to the loader and apologize for all the commotion I caused. I really didn't expect this to cause such a big stink or to get people so upset...but I see that, once I went to bed, it dropped into a flame war (I also like the maturity level used in changing my rank title).

I've never screwed over this project (like Zerix apparently did), I made a request for the source code...then received a very rude response from the first dev (Lax). I wasn't being rude or name calling, could have just said no and locked the thread and sent me a PM explaining why. That would have been the adult thing to do, however I am big enough to admit that I was wrong and I should not have requested it in a public forum and should have, also, just sent a PM to the developers instead.

Domosan

*Edit*

And could you please remove the rank title assigned to me. I never degraded into name calling.

Note: I compile MQ2 for 8 different machines. The same MQ2Main.dll works on all 8, because of the way the MQ2Auth system is designed. By merging all 8 of the MQ2Auth0.h files, I have one that looks like this:

I changed the comments of course but this is the file otherwise.

Code: Select all

// me
MQ2AUTH(YnRfLsTqRiRuV_YVXrt_Suido_Z);
MQ2AUTH(mUagPMfSqQaTotVpTYYrqbrnm_u);
// friend 1
MQ2AUTH(arleLHCoRICQUhgFEzJPAKXMdYw);
MQ2AUTH(MfvDHmxLXaObvWzucfnDHcOlnYe);
// friend 2
MQ2AUTH(cStosrJIZCzkxxQaGjXuhvzXXnt);
MQ2AUTH(tlnNECUePppwJRxQfQRiEOGaRnb);
// friend 3
MQ2AUTH(okmRVfXLKkyVESoKGFYLtrbJOsQ);
MQ2AUTH(DRgmRQbmjDIZQllegBSHXokxEsy);
// friend 4
MQ2AUTH(WjaYVZgaiXbHzyqptQICwQGZQiI);
MQ2AUTH(kYRoJYthZjlvDKnKlwyEBTPNKi_);
// friend 5
MQ2AUTH(CWGFhFeWngQUBhXfJpjVGSFUGbh);
MQ2AUTH(lhQatoUxxyEYxW_AkltRzkydMbQ);
// friend 6
MQ2AUTH(VH_ThwYG_KbCWRVAWDzTayIPCRS);
MQ2AUTH(EaQEdgNNAcQWCxYVYVVzARBDERw);
// friend 7
MQ2AUTH(XlUbGqWi_oGi_YZkG_eGkZWGSjj);
MQ2AUTH(nS_kSGZ_jGSeljG_jGkffGcffjW);
// friend 8
MQ2AUTH(Ttfr_TpDyBmnOQF_VHIgGWelfBF);
MQ2AUTH(j_WVddkuIiyPmwCPcZdkgoWplBj);
// friend 9
MQ2AUTH(VtzAyTWfKddEiVVqLwfQFUwKlzH);
MQ2AUTH(jFtBmSTHoMncHJYLlcFhOXpyzzc);
They copy/pasted their MQ2Auth0.h to me, i paste the lines in. The process is explained over and over and over and over and over all over these boards. Please use it this way and you will have no trouble compiling for all of your friends.

Again, you don't need 4 MQ2Auth0.h files, you simply need one

I also know how hard it can be to get all your auth information from the people you are compiling for. Personally I compile my version of mq for around 12 friends, and let me tell you, it was NOT a fun thing to do the first time.

1) Can someone please change my rank back

2) It's an inconvenience and, imho, an unnecessary one. If it's to prevent people from selling it, then, like you said, all they have to do is have the buyer run MQAuth.exe on their system, mail the file back, then they add that info into their .h file and they can make copies for that person each update....it's not preventing anything, it's just an inconvenience to everyone (even thought minor).

3) Can't you be a little mature about it, I apologized, there's no need to keep being a prick

*Edit*

4) Granted there are other posts that explain adding multiple people to the .h file, and everyone likes to shout "RTFM," but the link from the front page points to the "FAQ" about it and all it says is:
BEFORE COMPILING WITH ANY METHOD - Run MQ2Auth.exe (NOTE: IF YOU ARE COMPILING FOR SOMEONE ELSE, THEY NEED TO RUN MQ2AUTH.EXE. THE FILES MQ2AUTH GENERATES ALLOWS MQ2 TO RUN ON THE COMPUTER IT IS GENERATED FROM. THE GENERATED FILES CAN ALLOW MULTIPLE PEOPLE TO RUN THE SAME COPY, SEE THE COMPILING FOR FRIENDS TOPICS)
If you want people to realize this "obvious" bit of information, then you should edit that post and put the information there since that is what people are told to read from the download page. :)

Cheers,

Domosan

First time I saw that, I said "huh, ok, compiling for friends..." read it, said OK. I pass mq2auth.exe and the .h file to each computer/friend in a quick round robin, running it on each, and get the final .h back, compile, give everyone/computer the .exe. Took only a couple of minutes.

Domosan, as long as you continue to argue this theres no reason for me or anyone else to change your rank. The idea isn't to prevent someone from *selling* it, the idea is to prevent mass distribution. It is also for our and your own protection. Say you compile it for two of your friends that you know in game. Without MQ2Auth, you have no control over who they give it to. This provides you with not having to trust them not to give it out to people you dont want to have it. Not only that but it serves as damage control.

It is an inconvenience, but it is also inconvenient for you to enter a PIN number or sign your name when you use your credit card. But for the sake of argument, I could use your credit card, and sign your name, and the merchant would have no idea unless they ask for ID (most dont). If they'd have no idea, isnt this an unnecessary inconvenience? Furthermore, you could use your own credit card, sign your own name, and then dispute the charge later like a dickhead.

But.. this isn't like entering a pin or signing your name each time, this is like having to have your picture taken at the time you apply for the card. Like... OH NOES WHAT AN INCONVENIENCE. Not only that, but you also never have to sign your name or enter a pin, it's all riding on the merchant looking at that picture and determining it is indeed you. One time, one picture, never again. I think you are overexaggerating the one-time inconvenience, and if anyone wanted to find the information it is there in the announcements section, and plastered in every other forum... it's not hidden away somewhere in a remote part of the sahara desert or on the dark side of the moon.

Indeed you apologized, and you will notice I did not respond to you being a prick. My response to you was the copy/paste of my MQ2Auth0.h, and my response to burrito was being an ass.

When was the last time mq2auth.exe was changed? You seriously shouldn't need to run it again after you have generated 1 mq2auth0.h for all the machines you need it running on. I ran it a few versions ago and just use the same mq2auth0.h

I'm sure this has been said a million times before.

Closing the source to part of the program may suck, but if you noticed all the people who do stupid things with MQ you will probably realize it was a good choice.

If it was up to me MQ2Main.dll (or alot more of it) would have been part of the macroquest2.exe as well.

jab.

Don't ask me why, but Dom's title is really bugging me. He had no intention of being another Zerix, and he seems like a cool guy. He's chilled out, apologized, and is acting very mature. Change his title =/

Zerix was the inspiration for the MQ2Auth system. I quite honestly dont care if it bugs you and it will be changed when it is changed ;)
