I don't play EQ at all, not even installed, but this was my passion for a long time and I don't want it to go to the dogs.
Sprite needs a good kick in the ass. His MQ Gold is a ripoff of MQ, your hard work, and the hard work of the devs that have picked it up. I know that we will have /click working soon enough and MQ gold will have nothing on MQ. But its just wrong how sprite has dared anyone to do anything about his disregard for this project. He has modified MQ, added his version of /click and is selling that without the source code. I donno, I work for a software company. I am pissed off about this and I just might fire up some interst at the EFF just because I can.

A friend of mine was stupid and bought himself a copy of MQ Gold. You can't believe how close to the real thing it is. You know how when point to MQ in your system tray it says 'Macroquest [SRC2--30308]'. Well, MQ Gold says the same shit! In XP you know how if you do icobs it says wyrven software and EQLIB.DLL Version is 2003.1.11.0(like it has been since January I think). His software is a dup of MQ! To top it off he even includes a copy of the GPL that comes with MACROQUEST! ROFLMAO! I thought that was funny shit so I'm just letting everyone know. He's a smart guy, but I in no way condone the use of MQ GOLD for the simple fact that the source code is not included. There's some sneaky crap going on and I for one think the dogs of war should be let loose on this Sprite guy!

Guess what? Here's a copy for everyone!

Don't ask how I got it and don't ask about support. I provide no support blah blah blah. You f****** cheaters! You all can see this crap for yourselves! I posted the program for download with the GPL that accompanies the software.

http://members.cox.net/thebigwig/mqgold15052003.zip

So what I'm doing must be legit. The GPL reads

We protect your rights with two steps: (1) copyright the software, and
(2) offer you this license which gives you legal permission to copy,
distribute and/or modify the software.

I obviously can't easily modify it as:

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not
price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you
have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for
this service if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it
if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it
in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things.

at least my friend and I couldn't get a source code out of the accompanied zip file.

Well, I'll legitimately throw this one out for the dogs. I have one of those lawyers where you pay a monthly fee and you use him when/if you need him. I might just buy a copy and ask for a source code and if he don't provide I take him to court. Simple as that.

MQ Gold is coming back strong, it's being written as a MQ plugin, lots of user authentication (if you can crack the user auth you can most likely code your own mq gold), tons of features not included in regular MQ. Btw cybernerd, your friend has been banned. You should waited with posting that till I got latest struct changes updated =P I will post a new version of MQ Gold today with some updates and such.

I am glad to hear about the user authentication bit. But, I really hope you won't include stuff that crashes zones intentionally, etc...

I would also like you to consider marketing your product differently. Calling it MQ Gold insinuates that the MQ community as a whole approves (if informally) the idea. I think you would offend a lot less other people by simply saying that it's "Sprite's MQ Plugin" or something. Otherwise, those that work on this project will feel as though their work in gaining recognition for the name "macroquest" is being cashed in upon by you. If the public is aware that it is a 3rd party addon, then it suddenly becomes a lot less controversial. The Name "MacroQuest Gold" insinuates that it is a competitive/private build of the product with extra features rather than "MacroQuest + Sprite's MQ Plugin" which is what it is in either way.

I'm not certain yet if I will write it from scratch or write it as a MQ plugin (I think I can do that and only release source for MQ that is needed to hook the plugin, need to double check). Nah won't include anything to crash zones.

What's more interesting than my zonecrash though is i managed to hack GM flag yesterday (perma) till I got the dummy account banned for crashing Freeport 20ish times perfecting the crash. I appeared on /who all gm and such though, and it was perma, could log in and out the char, log it on from a different machine etc. I've been unable to reproduce that though.

For all those interested since FH is down. You can scrap your No PC Save hack that I did, it's been nerfed. Server automatically saves you on pretty much any item transfer you do (haven't found any loopholes yet). I'm most likely throwing my own team together to code my new version of MQ Gold though, it will be something like old MQ + offset hacking + surprises + things you thought could never be done.

Well..I just hope something that wild doesn't push SOE over the edge of sanity into really making things difficult for MQ (even at the expense of regular players). I suppose they could really randomize offsets/structs ..encryption....all kinds of posibilites I guess..... or, maybe I'm wrong...who knows :)

Well, my buddy is asleep right now since its after midnight right now... but do know that if you ban him i will do everything I can to shut you down since you are banning him for ... for ... ? not violating the licensing you provided with the zip file? I read it and so did everyone else. So explain that shit. He'd better get his $50 back if you banned him.

by whom? you hold the copyright? that's not the way I heard it earlier on this thread...

I also didn't see anything about the authors giving YOU permission to distribute it.

if I'm wrong, provide proof.

I have checked out the program and MQ Gold doesn't send any data out... just for those of you that are afraid of getting your info ganked... hehe... I know how the world revolves, and I know that NOBODY would ever try to gank passwords and crap =P

Do this sprite. There is no reason you cant modify MQ as long as those modifications are included in the source that you distribute. The plugin idea is a good one and keeps your work protected.
