Problems with Video Card, MSI GeForce4 Ti4200-TD8X64

All forums need a place for all the posts for people in the community to rant about things not relating to what the forum is about. This is that forum.

Problems with Video Card, MSI GeForce4 Ti4200-TD8X64

Post by Mckorr » Sun Apr 06, 2003 2:15 pm

I know this forum isn't used much, but thought I'd give it a shot...

I just installed an MSI GeForce4 Ti-4200. Pain in the ass, but finally got it to work, except for one thing:

For some reason Direct3D is not working at all. EQ won't load (freezes up), Ghost Recon freezes, and the Direct3D tests in DxDiag all fail. DirectDraw works, but not Direct3D.

I'm running the Detonator 42.30 drivers, and have tried both DX9 and DX8.1 (by uninstalling DX9 and reinstalling 8.1 from my WinXP Pro CD.. don't ask, complicated process.) I've tried just about every other WHQL certified driver from Nvidia and MSI, same problems on all of them.

The only thing I can think of is either the card is bad, or there is a problem with AGP. My system only supports AGP 4x, and the card can run at 8x. Can't see why that would cause a problem, but no other solution works.

Anyone out there have any ideas? If I can't fix this today I'm gonna exchange the card and try again with a new one, see if it's a hardware malfunction.

Also, have the DX9 SDK, so I can install the debug DX drivers if that would help figure out what is wrong.

Help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope!

Thanks.

Thanks, will exchange the card today and give it another shot.

And sorry Liz... that was just in case no one bothered to scroll down this far, seeing as this board is almost never used.

Problem solved.

Exchanged the video card... same problems. But after talking to the tech at Computer Renaissance I tried something I would never have thought of.

I disabled AGP4x, lowering it to the default 2x.

Works perfectly. It seems that older motherboards, apparently including my Abit KA7-100, don't provide enough voltage to the AGP slot in 4x mode. I do seem to remember that at the time I purchased this board AGP4x wasn't well implemented.

Well, works now. I'll be upgrading to an 8x capable motherboard eventually (maybe next month), and things should run a lot smoother.

Still seems to be a nice performance increase over my old Geforce2.
